Pros and Cons of the First Look

The concept of the first look isn’t new, but it’s still a highly debated topic. Almost half of the couples getting married are now choosing to have a first look. I have a lot of people ask me whether or not they should do a first look, so I decided to share some of the pros and cons of both sides!

Pros of the First Look

One of the most common reasons couples chose to have a first look is to help with the timing of the day. With the first look, you have the opportunity to take the bulk of your photos together before the ceremony. You can even incorporate having bridal party pictures taken during this time as well. Pictures tend to take up a lot more time than people anticipate, and guests can become antsy if the photos take too long during cocktail hour. When I ask brides what is one thing they would change about their wedding day, it’s that they felt the whole day was rushed and that they didn’t have enough time to visit with friends and family. Taking pictures ahead of time can leave more room for couples to be part of the reception and can even give them a chance to join cocktail hour.

Another reason couples may choose to do a first look is to help take away some of the pressure. If you’re nervous about having everyone see you for the first time going down the aisle while also trying to focus on your fiance at the same time, seeing each other beforehand could help. It also gives you some time to relax and connect, just the two of you. Also, if you’re worried about crying during the ceremony and don’t want people to see, a first look can help you get the tears out of the way beforehand.

Cons of the First Look

If you would prefer a more traditional ceremony, then the obvious first con of the first look is that it takes away from your fiancé seeing you for the first time when you walk down the aisle. If the concept of not seeing each other until the ceremony is something that is important to you both, you may want to opt out of having a first look. If you and your fiance are adamant about not having a first look but are concerned about the timing of pictures, talk to your wedding planner and photographer so they can work to create a timeline that works.

Another reason some couples decide against having a first look is if they are uncomfortable with the idea of their photographer or videographer being so up close and personal during the first look moment. I always encourage couples to work with someone they are comfortable with so when it comes to taking more intimate photos, it doesn’t feel as awkward for them. The more comfortable you are with the vendors you are working with, the less awkward it will feel during your wedding day.

At the end of the day, the decision is up to you and your fiance! If you are torn, consider some of the additional details of your wedding day such as the time of year. If your wedding day falls during a time when daylight hours are shorter, a first look would probably work more in your favor to ensure you get a chance to work with natural light. My recommendation is to do what works best for both of you. Your wedding day is ultimately about what the two of you want, whatever that may be!
